About me
I can still remember the excitement of going with my grandmother as a small girl to choose embroidery threads in a shop in Glasgow. It was an Aladdin's cave of colour, texture and drawers full of crisp new fabrics. That was the start of my life long love of embroidery, an absorbing journey that continues and has had many unexpected destinations.
Having originally trained as a teacher, I have been able to combine that with my passion for fabric and thread. I taught Creative Studies embroidery and textile courses for many years and also acted as an External Verifier for the City & Guilds Institute in London. I am now a freelance tutor and teach and lecture at many regional and national events. I particularly enjoy working with groups who want to develop their own ideas by enriching their responses and extending ways of working. My freelance teaching includes community projects with children and adults of all ages and levels of experience and has resulted in pieces now on public display.
I act as the Textile Advisor for the Lincoln Diocese and and have recently been appointed as a member of the Guildford Cathedral Fabric Advisory Committee. This gives me the opportunity to advise and give practical help in the care and preservation of church textiles and encourage an interest in contemporary ecclesiastical textiles. I have undertaken several ecclesiastical commissions.
I am a full member of The Embroiderers' Guild and am an active member of
The Textile Study Group (formerly the Practical Study Group - PSG)
exhibiting regularly throughout the UK. This is a diverse group of qualified, nationally and internationally known textile artists and tutors, who have established a reputation for excellence since its inception over 25 years ago.
